Harbor

Brand

On January 1st, 2017 I founded Harbor. It was a leap of faith, but my desire to be creative beyond directing commercials was too big to ignore. My interests span across photography, design, branding, and filmmaking, this all made the decision to open my own shop that much easier. Harbor exists not only as a production company, ultimately it exists as a way for me to scratch a creative itch.

Branding

Early on in the process I knew I wanted Harbor to exist as a brand first, and production company second. I wanted the name to be recognizable even if you’d never worked with us. This was a major influence in naming it Harbor. I wanted the name to be easy to say and share, but have nothing to do with production. This would allow the brand to live autonomously without being tied to any one industry.

For the branding I first wanted the logo to look like it was a hastily written entry into a captain’s log book.

A secondary logo wasn’t critical to the story, however from a branding and apparel sense I wanted something that could live on its own but be instantly recognizable, thus the ‘Harbor Master’ was born. To bring my vision to life I enlisted the help of my longtime collaborator Mark Markovich. Mark has an incredible eye for detail without dipping too far into photorealism.

Now, for no apparent reason at all I decided I needed a third, completely unrelated, lockup. It’s not hard to recognize the design influence on this one. A commercial shoot toured me through eastern Asia - Japan, Taiwan, China, and South Korea. I was infatuated with all of the intricate embroidery designs I kept seeing stitched onto satin jackets. The second I got back from that trip I pinged an extremely talented retro artist, Alex Lemoing, to bring the ‘dojo’ logo to life.
